Learning for the Future Makes a Happy Tiger Roar!

Reading/Writing- Students will begin to read more independently self monitoring their comprehension and fluency. We will read a variety of text on 2nd grade level. Your child will also read text on his or her individual reading  level in order to ensure reading growth. As the year progresses students will read AR books and take the corresponding comprehension quiz. We will guide students in this process until they are fully responsible for their own reading.

Spelling/Phonics- We are very excited to be using a new phonics program “Letterland” this year. This program contains lots of interactive activities and motivating strategies to help students be successful in phonics and spelling. A letter about this program and the homework will be coming home soon.

Math- Students will look at math problems from many perspectives  and show how to solve problems using multiple strategies. If your child needs help with math homework and you are not sure how to help write a note and I will be glad to help him or her in the morning. The best way to assist your child in math is to practice daily math skills such as basic addition and subtraction facts, counting money, or telling time.

Science/Social Studies- Much of this curriculum will be integrated into our reading lessons but we will also participate in hands on discovery while learning. Our topics of study this year are Weather, Matter, Animal Life cycles, Genetics, Sound, Historical Figures, Government, Traditions and Cultures, and Taking care of our environment.

Homework- Students will have homework Monday through Thursday of each week. A homework chart will be in your child’s folder for reference each Monday. Please be sure to sign this nightly. Students are expected to complete homework each night it is given. We will ease into our homework starting a few weeks in adding one subject at a time.

Assessments- Students will take part in various district wide assessments at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. These include Map Math and Reading and Mclass Reading. Students will also be assessed on spelling, reading comprehension, and fluency weekly in the classroom. Math assessments will come at the end of each Module (Unit). Students will also AR test on books at the their independent reading level 3-5 times per week.  I will send information about your child’s results when each assessment is complete. If you have any questions about these feel free to call or set up a meeting. An AR letter will come home soon informing you of how to check your child’s daily testing and average online.
